Born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, New York, Rita Hayworth planned to follow in her family’s dancing footsteps. Noticed by a Fox studio head, she made her film debut at sixteen in Dante’s Inferno (1935), followed by a series of small roles. She exploded into stardom after dancing with Fred Astaire in You’ll Never Get Rich (1942), becoming one of the most beloved pinup girls of World War II. (Her picture was even glued to an A-bomb dropped on the Bikini Atoll during a 1946 test.) Playing the smoldering lead in Gilda (1946) opposite Glenn Ford made her a superstar. Hayworth was married five times, including to Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan, making her the first movie star, before Grace Kelly, to marry a prince.
